The other day I discovered that the original samurais dedicated there life to discipline. Everything they did all day long they did it striving for excellence. To know that whatever you do is worth doing right. That’s how they lived every moment of their life.
The picture above is from the LC series ‘Warrior’. Christ being the ultimate warrior was the most disciplined individual ever to live. He learned the whole Torah, recruited followers, raised money, began a religion, prayed and meditated for days on end, and in the end was disciplined enough to undergo torture and death for us. His discipline defeated the enemy and he has left a challenge to follow in his footsteps.
Discipline is the thing that seperated us from animals. It is the thing that instead of sinning it is the strength to make the better choice. It is the ability to make a choice that hurts sometimes knowing though it will make you stronger.
If it wasn’t for enduring athletics as a kid I don’t know if I would have been prepared to be a devoted follower of Christ. I remember coming home from football practice when I was 9 and telling my mom I was quitting. Knowing that I was a mommy’s boy I had know doubt that she would see it my way as well. Well, guess what, she made me go back. For the next two years I got beat up by boys who were older and bigger than me. It wasn’t until I played sports later on in life that this payed off. I became the person that never gave up no matter what. It was my mother’s take on DIscipline that got me through it.
It’s what gets me through it now.
It seems some days it’s tougher to get going but it is the discipline that takes over. When I feel like taking a nap and escaping for a while there is something inside that says no, go spend time with the kids. I refuse to give in and one of the cool things about getting older is that you get more stubborn! As a mature Chist follower we should be in the constant process of developing our discipline. Making sure that we are’nt just staggering through this life but that we are making significant headway. What is it that has made you tough or what is the process by which you get stronger?
As for me, thanks mom, I miss you much.
