Today’s society and culture are defined by immediate results. In America, especially, there are very few things that we have to wait on and when something does take longer than we expect we act as though we are entitled to have results or action immediately. Unfortunately for many of us, myself included, this attitude and perspective can greatly influence the way we expect God to work.
For a little over 6 months, I have been praying for God to reveal the direction he wants me to take in terms of my “career” and job. I’ll never forget when, about 2 weeks into praying that prayer every day, I found myself saying, “Okay God, I’ve been waiting for you to show me and nothing is happening.” After only two weeks I was already stir crazy, to the point of just moving on with something that was mediocre just so I could know what was going to happen and what the end result would be.
Looking back now, 6 months later, I just laugh as I see that God had some changes in mind that were well beyond anything I had ever imagined.
As Christians, we must continually fight against adopting the world’s temporal perspective. It reinforces to us on a daily basis that things should happen for us immediately. When following God, we must share the eternal perspective that He has, which often involves lifetimes of development before the end goal or purpose is accomplished.
In Henry and Richard Blackaby’s book Spiritual Leadership, they say, “Many more leaders would see major accomplishments occur in their lives and in their organizations if only they were willing to wait as long as necessary to see God accomplish His will.”
Just imagine the impact that God could have in our lives if we were no longer concerned with immediate results, and instead were willing to obediently wait in confidence knowing His timing is perfect.
So I challenge you to journey with me to take the next uncomfortable step in your life by following through with whatever God is leading you to do – on His timeline.
