God knows your heart…. Do you?
Luke 18: 11-13 ESV
11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
What a bad scene.
Both guys in their church praying to God. One thanks God for his life by comparing himself to others. The other guy is wracked with conviction and guilt.
But at least this guy understands who he is. Because of that look what happens.
Luke 18:14 ESV
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Jesus was the one telling this story. Jesus shows us who gets His mercy and grace. The day you start looking around thinking how much better you are than everyone else be careful. Here are some quick points from this passage.
- Justification doesn’t come by works so no man can boast. (see Ephesians 2:8)
- Justification comes only after one realizes their brokeness.
- Justification was not based on the tax collectors faith.
- Justification was freely given called grace. No restitution was required.
Where are you at today? Still comparing yourself to others? Do you or have you cried out to God for mercy? Only one of these guys was made right with God which one will you be?
